Rank tracking
Rank tracking, and what to do when a number drops
A rank check records where a page appears in Google for one keyword. Repeat it on a schedule and you get a history. These guides cover what a position means, how often to check, and how to read a drop.
What rank tracking is
Each check records the position, the page that ranked, and the date for one keyword in one country and language. Repeat the check on a schedule and the chart shows whether a page is moving.
What a position tells you
A position is one reading for one keyword, in one country and language, on the day of the check. Our checks read the first 20 organic results. A site past them shows as Outside top 20. Read the trend across several checks before you decide.
Search Console or a rank tracker
Search Console reports an average position across the searches where your pages appeared. A tracker checks one keyword on a fixed schedule. They answer different questions, so many people read both.
Choosing keywords to track
Track keywords that match pages you can change. Auto-add reviews your site, then suggests the keywords it already shows up for, ranked by traffic and then volume. You pick the ones to keep.
How often to check
A weekly check answers most questions. A daily check helps when a keyword is moving and you are acting on it. Growth and above also get a limited daily pass when there is room.
Setting it up
Add the site and its keywords, then press Check ranks for a first reading. Every keyword gets its own chart from that point on.
When a rank drops
The rankings guide walks through five causes: a different page appeared, a competitor moved, your site changed, the result layout changed, or a Google update landed. Confirm which one happened before you change anything.
Watching rivals on the same keywords
Save a competitor and its position sits beside yours on the keywords you already track. The keyword gap lists what they rank for and your site does not.
